Frizzle

C tier

Frizzle is a feather type rather than a single closed breed: primary wing and body feathers curl outward and forward, giving birds a ruffled, ornamental appearance. The frizzle gene is used in true-breeding Frizzle standards and in crosses on utility and bantam bases, producing birds kept mainly for exhibition and small-flock eggs with secondary table use. As meat, Frizzle chickens yield conventional mild poultry; carcasses are not usually marketed under a premium breed label, though backyard dual-purpose birds supply home roasting and stewing. The curled plumage can limit weather protection, so free-range husbandry and finishing systems matter as much as genetics for eating quality.

History

Early European naturalists and travellers noted fowl with reversed or curled feathers in Asian and Mediterranean trade birds.

GB

Victorian poultry books described Frizzles as a curiosity type kept by English fanciers alongside Cochins and other Oriental imports.

US

American poultry standards began recognising Frizzle plumage on various colour varieties for show classification.

Breeders fixed frizzle as a selectable trait across large fowl and bantams, separating exhibition lines from ordinary utility stock.

Genetic studies clarified incomplete dominance of the frizzle allele and its interaction with other feathering genes.

Small-scale and ornamental poultry keepers maintained Frizzle flocks for eggs, display, and occasional home-table birds.
