Poultry
Faverolles
B tier
Faverolles is a French dual-purpose breed from the Eure-et-Loir region, featuring a beard and muffs, fifth toe, lightly feathered legs, and salmon, white, black, or blue colour varieties. Developed for winter laying and table quality, Faverolles combine a broad, meaty body with a calm temperament suited to small farms. Meat is tender and well flavoured with good breast and thigh development for a dual-purpose fowl; young birds roast excellently, and the breed historically supplied Paris markets. Modern production is mostly heritage and Label-adjacent small-scale, not industrial broiler volume.

History
Farmers around Faverolles and Houdan crossed local fowl with Asiatic and other types to improve winter eggs and market meat.
French poultry societies described the Faverolles type with beard, muffs, and five toes as a distinct regional breed.
British imports established Salmon Faverolles as a popular utility and exhibition dual-purpose fowl.
American recognition of Faverolles supported breeding for show and small-farm table production.
Industrial poultry reduced commercial Faverolles numbers while conserving the breed in fancy and farmhouse flocks.
French heritage programmes and free-range enthusiasts revived interest in Faverolles for quality roast chicken and eggs.
