Poultry
Empordanesa
B tier
Empordanesa is a Catalan heritage breed from the Empordà region of north-eastern Spain, kept as a dual-purpose Mediterranean fowl with red plumage varieties, white earlobes, and active foraging habits. Birds lay cream to light brown eggs and produce lean, savoury carcasses suited to traditional Catalan country cooking. Culinary use emphasises roasting and stewing of farm-raised birds with more structure and flavour than fast-grown broilers. The breed is relatively rare outside Catalonia but forms part of Spain’s regional poultry biodiversity programmes.
