Black Star

E tier

Black Star is a commercial hybrid brown-egg sex-link layer, typically producing black or dark pullets with lighter undercolour or markings that contrast with cockerels at hatch. Hatcheries market Black Star for high brown-egg output, hardiness, and easy sexing rather than as a pure heritage breed. Spent-layer and surplus-male meat is lean and mild, suited to boiling, stewing, soup, and mince. As a commercial hybrid layer type, Black Star is optimised for eggs; table carcasses are secondary and lighter than broiler hybrids.

History

US

American hatcheries developed and marketed Black Star sex-link hybrids for small egg flocks.

US

Black Star became a familiar trade name alongside Red Star and other colour sex-links.

Selection emphasised egg production, livability, and black pullet identification accuracy.

Backyard poultry growth expanded Black Star chick availability through mail-order hatcheries.

Small commercial free-range farms used Black Star hybrids for efficient brown eggs.

Black Star remained a standard commercial hybrid layer option in hatchery listings.
