Black Australorp
B tier
Black Australorp is an Australian dual-purpose breed developed from Black Orpington stock, selected for exceptional egg production, soft black plumage with green sheen, and a solid utility body. It became famous in the early twentieth century for record brown-egg laying while retaining enough size for table use. Culinary use includes roasting younger birds and stewing older layers; meat is moist and milder than gamey landraces but fuller than industrial broilers. Eggs are large and brown. The breed remains a backyard and small-farm favourite where reliable layers and occasional meat matter together.

History
Australian breeders refined Black Orpington imports toward higher egg yields under local conditions.
The name Australorp distinguished the production-oriented Australian type from English Orpingtons.
Extraordinary laying trials publicised Australorp productivity and drove international interest.
American recognition and imports established Black Australorps in North American utility flocks.
Hybrid layers later surpassed pure Australorps commercially, yet the breed kept strong dual-purpose status.
Global backyard keepers valued Black Australorps for calm temperament, eggs, and green-sheen beauty.
