Ayam Pelung
A tier
Ayam Pelung is a large Indonesian chicken from West Java (Cianjur and surrounding areas), traditionally selected for an unusually long, melodious crow as much as for size. Birds are tall, heavy-boned, multi-coloured, and slower growing than commercial broilers, with a substantial carcass when finished as table fowl. Culinary use treats Pelung as premium village-type meat: firm, flavourful flesh for soups, grilled preparations, and festive dishes. Large frame yields more meat than ordinary ayam kampung, while free-range rearing keeps fat moderate and taste pronounced. Crow contests remain culturally important alongside meat and breeding markets.
Also known as: Ayam Pelung, Pelung, Indonesian long-crow chicken

History
Large crowing fowl in the Cianjur region of West Java were kept by local communities for voice and household meat.
Selection for prolonged crow and impressive stature distinguished Pelung from ordinary kampung chickens.
Organised crowing competitions elevated Pelung status and fixed regional breeding networks.
Documentation and livestock programmes recognised Pelung as an Indonesian genetic resource.
Dual interest in contest cocks and large meat birds supported hatcheries and farm conservation.
Culinary and cultural tourism around West Java continued to market Pelung as a distinctive local chicken.
