Spice
Guatemalan Green
S tier
Guatemalan green cardamom is Elettaria grown in the cloud-forest slopes of Alta Verapaz and neighbouring zones—now one of the world’s largest sources of green pods for export. Flavour is true green cardamom, often clean and floral, though terroir and drying can yield a slightly different balance than Kerala lots; quality spans commodity to exceptional. Much anonymous “green cardamom” in Western supermarkets is Guatemalan. Use interchangeably with Indian green in most recipes; side-by-side tasting reveals origin nuance. Look for vibrant colour and tight capsules. Guatemala’s scale keeps green cardamom accessible for daily chai and baking.
