Fruit
Cucumis melo
S tier
Cucumis melo is the muskmelon species that includes netted American cantaloupes, European true cantaloupes, Galia, Charentais, and many related dessert melons. Fruit is aromatic when ripe, with orange, green, or white flesh depending on type, and a sweet perfume that signals readiness better than colour alone. Rinds may be netted, sutured, or smooth within the species. Breakfast plates, prosciutto wraps, salads, and agua fresca all draw on C. melo of some market class. When a US recipe says cantaloupe, it usually means netted orange-flesh reticulatus types. Chill before serving; cut melon spoils quickly at warm room temperature.

History
Early melon domestication in Persia and adjacent regions shaped Cucumis melo diversity.
European garden culture named and refined cantaloupe-type melons around Cantalupo estates.
Netted American muskmelons became retail “cantaloupe” in North America.
Global breeding diversified commercial C. melo into shippers, Galias, and specialty types.
