Charentais

Fruit

Charentais

S tier

Charentais is the small, smooth-to-lightly-sutured French melon with dense deep-orange flesh and an explosive perfume that defines European cantaloupe luxury. Fruit is typically one to two pounds—personal size—with pale gray-green rind that may show faint ribs. Flavour is concentrated and floral-sweet far beyond many watery netted shippers. Serve halved with a spoon, wrapped in Bayonne or Prosciutto, or simply chilled. Fragile and short-keeping; true Charentais is a local-season prize more than a month-long cold-chain item. Do not confuse bland smooth melons with ripe Charentais aroma.
