Waltham butternut is the mid-20th-century Massachusetts-bred standard that defined supermarket butternut shape—uniform tan bells, thick neck meat, and dependable sweetness. Almost every “classic butternut” owes something to Waltham or its descendants. Flesh is deep orange, fine-grained, and excellent for roasting. Use as the all-purpose butternut for soups, cubes, and purées. Stores for months in cool dry conditions. Still the reference cultivar in many seed and produce descriptions.
