Areca catechu

Nuts

Areca catechu

S tier

Areca catechu is the palm species that produces areca (betel) nut, the astringent stimulant seed of South and Southeast Asian quid culture—not a baking nut. Traditional use with betel leaf and lime defines it. Health guidance applies. Quality dried nuts are hard and aromatic; mouldy or chemical-smelling lots fail. Pharmacologically active; not a children’s snack. Do not substitute into Western pastry as if it were almond.
