Altbier
Altbier is Düsseldorf’s copper-brown, top-fermented ale with firm bitterness and clean malt—often cold-conditioned for lager-like smoothness. Flavour sits between English bitter and German lager: toasty malt, spicy hop, low fruitiness. Excellent with sausages, stews, and rye breads; a solid cooking ale for onion gravy when you want bitterness without IPA resin. Reduce carefully to avoid harsh hop concentration.

History
Rhineland “old” ale methods persisted as altbier while lager spread elsewhere.
Düsseldorf taverns fixed altbier as a local copper ale speciality.
Craft altbiers revived the bitter brown German ale style abroad.
